A Treehouse Without the Tree

Location: Saugatuck, Michigan

When you build a house on an old dune ridge overlooking a valley, it can make you feel like you’re living in a tree. However, this 4,000+ square-foot home is far from your average tree house.

Taking advantage of the land, Tammis worked with the homeowners to create a design that would fit the couple’s penchant for entertaining and accommodate multiple guests staying for a weekend, while also acting as a retreat within the solitude of the wooded area in western Michigan.

To do this, the home is divided into three different wings: a master suite wing, an entertaining wing, and a wing for guest rooms located on the opposite side of the house from the master bedroom.

Additionally, two guest rooms, separated by a main living area, are located in a fully furnished basement with an attached walkout patio facing the ravine and woods behind the house.

The kitchen, designed by Visionary Cabinetry & Design, flows into the porch area. Looking out over the ravine and woods makes this an ideal space for summer dining and entertaining.

The spacious living room brings in natural light, enhanced by the vaulted ceiling, and features a slate gas fireplace.
